LCD vs LED vs Plasma – Let us have a detailed understanding

There was a time when you need not do so much thorough research before buying a TV. You could just simply walk into a store and buy the single kind of model that was sold by your favourite brand. But, now we have a plethora of choices to choose from. Various brands of televisions like Micromax TV, LG TV, Panasonic TV, Onida TV, VU TV, etc., are offering varied types of televisions like LCD TVs. LED TVs, Plasma TVs, OLED TVs, etc. Choosing the right kind of screen can do great wonders to your TV viewing experience. Each type of TV, be it LED, LCD, or Plasma, has its own advantages and disadvantages in the form of features that it provides and the cost of buying it. In this article, we will have a detailed comparison between LCD, LED, and Plasma.

We will begin by first understanding what LCD, LED, and Plasma TVs are!

  • LCD TVs –

Liquid Crystal Display type televisions have an LCD screen that is present in front of the fluorescent backlight display. When the light falls on the LCD screen from behind, then the picture builds up by combining the colours. The LCD televisions are really inexpensive and have a good flat screen display. But, if you want to have a true back colour viewing experience, or are more into playing high frame rate games, then LCD is not the choice for you.

  • LED TVs –

These are basically LCDs only with a minor difference that gives the LEDs some major advantages over LCDs. In LEDs, rather than using a lamp like structure to get the fluorescent display, they have small Light Emitting Diodes that light up the display. The use of LEDs makes it really slim and power efficient. They yield a true black effect, wider viewing angle, and high response time. But, when it comes to cost, they are more expensive than LCDs and Plasma TVs.

  • Plasma TVs –

In plasma TVs, an array of light emitting gas cells are placed between the two gas sheets. The plasma TVs don’t rely on an external light source to power their display, thus providing them the advantage of having a true black effect. The picture quality and screen refresh rate of Plasma TVs are also too good. This is the ideal kind of television for gaming. They also have some disadvantages like they are too bulky and less energy efficient. When you use the plasma televisions during the day time, then its screen will get flared.

Now let us have a comparison between the features of LEDs, LCDs, and Plasma TVs.
